Rebecca Sugar was one of the last guests to give a panel in the final day of Argentina Comic Con, that went from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th in Costa Salguero Center of Buenos Aires. This was her first time in Argentinean soil and she felt the heat of the crowd.
Note: I arrived five minutes late and lost the begining of the panel.
The big auditorium was crowded with 800 fans that chanted her name, characters, and some moments. It was an interview with two presenters who spoke to Rebecca in English. One of the first things Rebecca said was that she felt relieved after A Single Pale Rose because of the revelation on that episode. They followed the NO SPOILERS policy as in Brazil’s CCXP a day before, but all RS could say was:
That Steven was “going to be tested” and nobody is “infinite”, something about Steven’s careful personality.
There is going to be a Amethyst backstory from she was born in the Kindergarten and how she became what the Ame we all know and love. “She had a different behaviour”, but there were spoilers.
White Diamond has different problems compared to Yellow and Blue, but Rebecca was amazed on how people realized about her. Also that there was going to be a diamond fusion soon.
Lapis is also going to change and officially became a Crystal Gem after throwing the Barn on Blue.
There were questions about the characters, on which she said that fusions were meant to explore relationships “cool and exciting”, but also to see the contrary as Malachite. Also:
Rebecca loved working on the Off Colours and she refered to them as a “Rag Tag team of misfits”
Jasper was a very complicated character because she has something to prove and wants to overcompensate after the events of Jail Break. She has a very big insecurity too and cares deeply about what she loves, besides of tying to be better.
The Diamonds personalities are based on their voice actresses.
Anytime Rebecca told some facts about the show there were chants for characters. But there was a particular one: Lapidot chanting. The whole audience wanted Lapidot. The creator was laughing, but also on every time she was telling she mumbled in order to avoid telling spoilers. There was an Adventure Time related question in which Sugar said that the show finished three months ago encouraged to “tell personal experiences” (more personal than her indie comics) and taught that “experimenting was possible”, something that continued with her own show.
“Crystal Gems are hippies”
There was time to praise her “brilliant” team. Every week Sugar works on 7 to 10 episodes and the movie and lifts weights before work twice a week. She said Dee Dee (Pearl) was fan of Susan Egan (Pink) and the situations on the booth are very funny, like Shelby Rabara who did all the tap dancing for Mr. Greg. And talking about the episode, a fan question asked her which was the episode that affected them the most and it was that particular one because Sugar always wanted to do a musical and fullfiled it with seven songs in 11 minutes.
A fan question asked Sugar how she described the Crystal Gems in one word: “The Crystal Gems are hippies, they are like free spirits”, she said.
The audience was in shadows. The announcers told to play the movie trailer and everybody was yelling. Rebecca was happy with the reaction and said she won’t cut her hair after the film was finished, which is on development at the moment. The time was ending, but she gave some advice to creators: said that you don’t have to like your drawings, even she didn’t, but it’s healthy to try and a sign of wanting to be better.
Finally, Rebecca ended the panel with Is It Over Isn’t It?, Escapism (thanks @jaelav3) the Steven Universe intro in Spanish and English with her uke and finally with Everything Stays on guitar.
The day ended, there was a pouring rain, but the sun was setting down. The sky turned Jasper. Oh Diamond, my Diamond.
Some other facts:
Sugar would love a spin off of the Crying Breakfast Friends, suggested by one of the announcers
After SU, she would like to continue on a show of science fiction, fantasy and music
